Anshen + Allen
Joseph Eichler, a residential real estate developer, hired Frank Lloyd Wright disciple Bob Anshen of Anshen & Allen to design the initial Eichlers, in the California Modernist style. The first prototypes were built in 1949. The firm continued to design Eichler and Mackay tract housing until 1962. It was Bob Anshen who first introduced what would become a classic Eichler feature, an atrium, into the building plans.
Anshen + Allen helped shape the role of design as a catalyst for social awareness and conscience. In the last twenty years, the San Francisco office has dedicated its practice solely to healthcare and academic projects, championing patient-centered care, sustainability and evidence-based design. Anshen + Allen continues to engage architects that are committed to creating inspiring architectural experiences and fostering the belief that buildings are not only iconic in their form but also in the way they reinforce the individual spirit and change human history.
